Narrative Role-Playing Cards

(Hero’s Journey Activity)

ChatGPT Image Apr 22, 2026, 03_55_12 AM.png

These student-created character and item cards emerged from a unit on the Hero’s Journey. Students designed their own characters (Hero, Mentor, Shadow, etc.) and assigned traits, abilities, and narrative roles.

What it shows:

Students engaging creatively with literary structure.
Ownership over narrative elements.
Application of abstract concepts (archetypes) into concrete forms.

Reflection:
This activity successfully increased engagement and creativity, though it remained somewhat teacher-framed. I began by asking students to define their own archetypes and use the cards I provided as references to create their own heroes journey card games where they themselves were the hero and they would use their personal life challenges to tell their story throughout the game.
