Visual Interpretation Work
Student Annotation

Student work from The Great Gatsby and Siddhartha shows annotation, sketching, and interpretation of key passages.
What it shows:
· Students making meaning through multiple modalities, including differentiation through the use of written versus typed text.
· Individual interpretation of imagery and symbolism
· Active engagement with text
Reflection:
These artifacts highlight an important tension in my teaching. Students are clearly thinking and interpreting, but often in response to teacher-selected passages and prompts. Through Safir and Jaber’s framework (Pedagogies of Voice: Street Data and the Path to Student Agency), I now see that while students are engaging in analysis, they are not always positioned as knowledge creators. My goal moving forward is to allow students more choice in what they analyze and why.
